| Dennis with Oprah Winfrey at his art gallery in St. Kitts |
Bright sunlight, turquoise seas, hot sandy beaches, rhythmic movements, sharp contrasts, images emerging from spectacular splashes of colour. Such are the paintings of Dennis Richards, at times realistic, at others symbolic, this Kittitian artist has attempted to capture the spirit and vitality of his people and to delve into the innermost sanctuary of the individual’s soul.
Just like the black sand that covers the beaches of the island, Richards is part of the Kittitian landscape. The artwork of Dennis Richards may be local in flavour, but its appreciation has gone far beyond Kittitian shores. His work has found its way into the homes of such celebrities as Oscar winner and Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and Madam Wang Ching She-Ying, Director of China Rebar and Hsin Flour Feed and Vegetable Oil Co. in Taiwan and Chairperson of Omni Bank in the US.
Richards art is multifaceted and so are his techniques which range from the use of pastels, to paintings, to collages, to sculpture. Black Sand features Richards’ paintings and pastels. The landscapes that he chooses to immortalise are realistic.
